Hello, I’m Stela Ahau and in this post, I’m going to talk about How to Become a Shaman, what is a shaman, where does a shaman get his power from? what kind of shaman you could be, and also the best recommendations to follow the shaman path with online courses with recognized and respected shamans.
Now you have to know that I’m talking about this because I had my own shaman path that began in 2008 when I received my first Shamanic Initiations and Training in Inca Shamanism and Medicine that last 3 years, and after that, I have been at service giving consultations, healings, and also I give courses about initiatory rites in Mexico, so I’ve been putting this wisdom in practice for many years and I have seen how this can transform lives and empower people to sing the song of their hearts and realize their goals no matter if they are about physical healing, emotional healing, more happiness, freedom or different projects that they want to achieve. So let’s begin…
What is a Shaman?
But first, If you are reading this is because you want to become a Shaman, but what is a Shaman indeed?. Well, that word has been applied to many different kinds of people that do many different things but to have a clear definition here let’s define a Shaman as a person that has developed the ability to be an intermediary between the physical and the energetic and psychic informational world. I make this mention because for me and what I have been taught the field of things has three components:
- Physical: Everything that can be perceived by the 5 physical senses: touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight.
- An Energetic One: That is literally the energy that the things have and can be measured scientifically like temperature, electromagnetism, electricity, etc.
- And The Psychic Information: That contains the true essence of what that thing is, and that can only be perceiving with psychic abilities or instruments. This is very important to mention because Energy is not only numbers or levels of something, they carry memories, stories, connections… in other words information.
So a Shaman can interpret the energetic and informational data of a thing, event, place, time, or person and can help to reorganize that data in order to bring a new scenario into reality. She or he is a dancer between the worlds:
And this role of Shaman comes from a long time ago, it is the most ancient spiritual path and also a pillar to civilization because it was the Shaman that began to help the people with their illnesses, and also watches the cycles of nature, discovered a connection with us and plants and the moon, and stones, etc, also helped to solve many situations of the daily life like how to get food, how to organize the harvest cycles, and also social and political issues that needed attention as society became more complex. in other words, we couldn’t have survived without them!

Where does a shaman get his power from?
So if a Shaman is that kind of person how does she do it?. In all my courses about shamanism, I always include this question: Where do you think a shaman gets his power from? and I get all kind of answers but the majority are like “from the earth, from the moon, from the animals, from the herbs, from nature, from the four elements, from the spirits…” and that only tells me that people are thinking in external solutions, like in the movies where a magical and powerful object at least gives you the source of all the magic and solutions, and well maybe it can be something like that, but first you have to look inside.
Let me explain, making a small summary we have a conscious mind, a subconscious mind, and a superconscious mind, and the majority of humanity ignore that we have to clean our path to get the superconscious and dance with the energetic and psychic informational world because the only way to get there is through the subconscious, we cannot use an amulet or a magic wand or herbs and connect directly with our superconscious and divinity if our subconscious is not clean enough… that only is going to become a mess.
So the correct answer to the question Where do you think a shaman gets his power from? is from its own merit, and how that merit is gained? comes from having transformed your wounds into virtues. So the first step to becoming a shaman is that you have to look inside you and make conscious the unconscious wounds so you can transform them into compassion, love, faith, hope, joy, resilience, etc.
This means that a true training to become a shaman (no matter if it is presential or online) has to include first disciplines and exercise that will make you connect with your inner self to transform the wounds and make them wisdom pearls.
Now, it is important to say that shamanism has a whole different world of wisdom and options to do this, it is not like psychotherapy where probably most of the time you’re gonna be talking about your problems, no. Here in shamanism, you will find that many of the ways can be in silence or with guided journeys, or with fire, or with different tools, with the drums and rattles, but all that has a logic and profound wisdom, that kind of exercises are not random if you’re trained with the right master, they are designed to touch you and transform you very deeply and quickly to transcend more and more and gain wisdom.
So the more you do that, you earn more power to connect within you and through you with all the natural forces, the elements, the herbs, the moon, the stones, the quartz, and etc. Because all those things are going to be your allies only in the same measure that you become more clear inside.
To become a Shaman has to do with developing psychic abilities?
This is a very important question because some people get impressed very easily by people with psychic abilities, but the true shaman knows that this kind of powers can be developed for people with good but also with bad intentions, and this is because those are inherent abilities to all humankind, so they are a tool just that, they are not a sign of illumination or good behavior, they are just like a knife that can be used to cook delicious dishes but also can be used as a weapon.
So for the true shamans, the earth keepers, is more important the connection of all the abilities that you could have with your heart, with unconditional love, and this is for two reasons: they want you to see the energetic and psychic world through the eyes of love and compassion so you can have a centered path and avoid many mistakes with the use of power, and second, because there are advanced powers that can only be developed if you have a loving heart, so to only use psychic abilities without that connection with your heart can result in a mess and a waste of time for your evolution.
So put your focus in clear yourself so you can have more joy and freedom and feel more unconditional love and all the psychic abilities that you need will come in an appropriate way, to help you in your path to ascension. In the midtime don’t worry you can use many tools that can help you in your shamanic work like pendulums, bowls, drums, rattles, stones, etc that will be your allies to reflect the field of psychic information so you can read it, but remember the most important is a joyful and loving heart.
What kind of Shaman can you Become? The 7 paths of the Shaman
One of the things that is a common belief about being a shaman is that a shaman helps to heal people and that is the only kind of shaman, that is a fallacy. There are many ways that a Shaman can take to express their power and beauty of their souls, in here I’m going to mention the 7 paths that a shaman can take (according to one of my teachers Jose and Lena Stevens)
1. The Shaman as an artist.
There are Shamans that can portray stories and symbols in their art through paintings, ceramic, manufacture of different utensils, sculptures, fabrics, clothing design, and even interior decoration. These are people called to transform the environment with figures and colors and they express their power in this way.
For example, once I met a Shaman from Huichol people from Nayarit Mexico, he barely speaks a word but his art was really impressive to the heart, also he said he make special work for people who want to portray a particular story of their life, like an ode to a specific chapter in your life and also a picture of how do you see yourself in an evolved form.
So maybe you’re not going to see this old man doing ceremonies to many people or giving consulting with herbs, but he can help you to transform your soul story through his art… so he is a Great Shaman. Look here the picture we bought from him (it is made with threads of many colors:
2. The Shaman as a Story Teller
This is a very important role for a Shaman because through the ability to tell stories a Shaman can preserve the collective history and also she can transform your actual stories into new ones, and to do this she has to be charismatic, a great presence and voice and a great inspiration.
One example of this is a woman called Blanca which I met a few years ago in a course and she literally works telling stories at schools and other institutions or companies, and she was studying shamanism because she discovered that through the stories she tells she could bring healing to the soul of the people and make, the people can transform through the story plot and through the characters and their adventures also the soul is elevated to find peace, joy or wisdom.
3. The Shaman as a Ceremony Leader
This is also a very special path for the Shaman. As a Ceremony Leader, a Shaman has the ability to guide people in ceremony, it has the ability to create the appropriate atmosphere of reverence or silence or wonder or celebration that a ceremony needs and has that energy that can contain a group and help them enter to whatever state of mind is indicated for the occasion.
A ceremony leader shaman is good at giving energetic initiations, also know how to use the rhythms of the drums, rattles and other instruments to change the frequencies of the mind, maybe also she uses her voice to transmit certain vibrations, he knows how to connect with the four directions and elements to make a sacred space and really has a gift to do it.
Generally, this kind of Shaman is dedicated to very specific wisdom and follow that knowledge through the end, she is not a seeker, she knows her path and deepens in it, and it is all her practice and commitment that gives her all that power to convoke a great sacred space for the ceremony.
4. The Shaman as a Warrior
There are Shamans that have that presence of someone strong, fierce, protector, and brave, and those can develop more this ability of Warrior. A Warrior Shaman can be a warrior in a great variety of different ways, for example from literally be someone who has military abilities and protect people physically through those who help to fight against the demons in our lives, that can be “external demons” (for example a shaman can be a lawyer that can help people to bring back justice and fight against a criminal) or “internal demons” that can be our fears, limiting beliefs, or other information that is blocking us from our maximum potential.
So a warrior shaman can be from a trainer in martial arts to part of an organization that fights a good cause, but always has that great presence that is imponent and makes you feel like you have the best ally to win that battle you’re having. But remember that a good warrior also has compassion and is capable to see “the enemy” as someone who also needs to heal and can integrate all the situation to the unconditional love so everyone can transcend it.
5. The Shaman as a Teacher
Wow, this a very valuable role, because it can bring us more shamans!. Have you heard about people that are good at what they do but they cannot teach it? (there are many academic professors like that ups!), well, that is not the case of a Shaman Teacher, the shaman teacher has the ability to chew the information and give it organized to the people so they can understand.
He has the ability to be creative in the forms of teachings, he creates his own teaching material where there was nothing before, and also has a great presence as a teacher, he can be a friend and is always listening to his intuition to teach people what they need, and that is a special ability because their classes are not a recipe that is repeated and repeated, with a true teacher shaman even when the class is about the same topic every time can be different.
6. The Shaman as a Leader
This path is for people who have the calling to be a group leader. They attract people, people listen to them, they don’t even have to make an effort and boom everybody is there with them.
This role is present in major or minor grade in every shaman because in the past the Shamans use to be also the leaders of the community, they were like the president now and they also have to deal with politics and diplomacy, so nowadays many Shamans can feel the calling to express their soul mission in this manner, maybe they are leaders in their family, in their block, in their church, at the school, in their district, in their state, in an organization, in a company, or they have a publicity company or some other things related with the leadership of a group.
And this role is very necessary because some things we can do by ourselves but for others, we need to be together and reunite our forces to make things happen.
7. The Shaman as a Healer
I left the best known until the end because we are more used to hear about this role in the Shaman. A Healer Shaman has the ability to create that atmosphere of confidence and security where people can be vulnerable and connect with their wounds in order to heal them with help of the shaman, these wounds can be physical, emotional, or spiritual, and to deal with them the healer shaman can use a variety of tools, like:
- Physical Medicine,
- herbalist remedies,
- stones, crystals, quartz
- essential oils,
- Knowledge about Energetic Anatomy – harmonizations
- Soul Retrievals
As you can see all these paths or roles are present in all Shamans in one way or another, but you have to look inside you and recognize which are your best abilities and try to make it stronger, maybe two or three of these 7 paths are the most pronounced in you, take advantage of that and develop your natural gifts.
